Hammers, baseball bats used in Shoppers robbery

Durham Police yesterday said three youths have been arrested after an armed robbery in Ajax. Two of the youth were already on court-imposed conditions relating to previous robbery charges.

On Sunday, September 28 at about 11:50 pm, members of West Division responded to a robbery at a Shoppers Drug Mart, located at 15 Westney Road North, Ajax. The masked suspects entered the store armed with hammers and baseball bats, then began smashing fragrance displays. The suspects stole a large quantity of perfume and fled the area in a vehicle prior to police arrival.

Minutes later, officers located the suspect vehicle travelling westbound on Highway 401. The vehicle was eventually stopped by police after attempting to flee and all three suspects were taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle was stolen, said police.

A 15-year-old and a 16-year old male, both from Toronto were charged. The first suspect was recently sentenced to probation for a previous robbery, highlighting a troubling pattern of recidivism. The second suspect was recently charged and is out on bail for a previous robbery with a firearm.

Another 16-year-old male from Toronto was also charged. All were held for bail hearings.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355.
