Drugs, weapons found during Joyceville lockdown

Kingston: $26,000+ worth of tobacco and marijuana have been intercepted and seized at Joyceville institution, which also recently underwent a security lockdown.

On July 14, officers intercepted inmates who were attempting to bring contraband and unauthorized items into the institution.

The contraband seized includes 111.08 grams of tobacco and 153.05 grams of marijuana. The total institutional value of this seizure is estimated at $26,493.00.

The police have been notified and the institution is investigating.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

The CSC introduced a complete smoking ban in all federal correctional institutions in 2008.

CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.

End of lockdown and search

The lockdown put in place at the assessment unit at Joyceville Institution on July 5 ended on Monday. The institution has resumed its normal operations.

A number of unauthorized items, including weapons, were found during the exceptional search.

Visits to the institution have resumed.
