Leaked info was about real estate negotiations: Clarington

The Municipality of Clarington told Durham Post that the leak of confidential information is related to an ongoing real estate negotiation.

It said it is not yet known how the information was disclosed, and as the negotiations are still ongoing, their details remain confidential.

“The municipality’s real estate agent was contacted by two individuals and during their discussions it became apparent these individuals were in possession of confidential information about an ongoing real estate negotiation,” said the municipal explanation, when asked.

“It is not known how this information would have come into their possession. Unauthorized disclosure of information about a sensitive commercial negotiation is concerning for the municipality,” said the spokesperson.

They pointed out that as “the real estate negotiation in question is still ongoing and the details remain confidential”.

Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, at the June 2 meet, called the leak “exceptionally serious” and said it could impact millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money (see below).

During the meeting, the leak was disclosed by Clarington Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and Solicitor Rob MacIver answering questions from Mayor Foster.

MacIver also named two individuals and indicated an intention to change the outcome that council might make on the negotiation.

In all, about a dozen people – five Clarington staff and seven elected representatives – were in possession of the confidential information.
