Less drunk drivers charged during 2019 Festive R.I.D.E.

Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) has completed its final week of the Festive R.I.D.E program, stopping more than 4,141 vehicles and charging 12 drivers with drinking and driving offences.

Below are the final statistics for the 2019 Festive R.I.D.E. Season.

During the final week from Dec 23, 2019 to Jan 1, 2020, officers conducted R.I.D.E. checks in Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Scugog and Brock Township.

The 2019 Festive R.I.D.E. totals are as follows (with the 2018 Festive R.I.D.E. totals in brackets):

After the final week, the Festive R.I.D.E. team charged a total of 104 motorists for drinking and driving offences. Last year, a total of 117 were charged. Another 89 motorists registered a WARN on a roadside screening device and had their driver’s licence suspended for 3 days. Last year, a total of 111 drivers had their licences suspended for registering a WARN.

Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a drinking and driving criminal offence will have his or her driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for 7 days.
