Local artist to work with community on new artwork

Pickering has announced a project under which a local artist will work collaboratively with the community to create new artwork.

The city is seeking community feedback on Pickering Museum Village for creation of new artwork.

A city statement said 2022 marks the 175th Anniversary of the Greenwood Blacksmith Shop at Pickering Museum Village. Nineteenth century Greenwood was a bustling community boasting many notable businesses and residents. At the center of the community was the Greenwood Blacksmith Shop. Local businesses, industries and residents relied on the dedicated people working in the shop to supply and repair essential tools and equipment for their homes and businesses.

The City of Pickering is excited to work with artist Dani Crosby to create a suite of images that celebrate this important site, its legacy, and continuous impact in the community and within the context of blacksmithing, said a city statement.

Crosby’s practice involves collecting feedback, stories, and experiences from communities in order to create composite images rich with symbolism that illustrate shared experiences.

Over the next two months, Crosby will be collecting information through surveys and individual interviews to uncover personal stories and histories with the site and medium of blacksmithing. The consultation will result in a series of banners and billboard murals to be installed throughout the city and at the museum later this year.

The City of Pickering invites anyone interested to provide information, stories, and feedback through this survey form: https://letstalkpickering.ca/gbsanniversary

This project is made possible through the support from the Government of Canada, Department of Canadian Heritage.
