Durham Police are looking to identify a male suspect after two cyclists and a pedestrian were injured on a Whitby trail over the weekend.
On Sunday, September 6, at about 1:00 pm, members of Central West Division were called to the area of the Whitby Waterfront trail on Thickson Road South in Whitby. Officers arrived to find paramedics treating two injured cyclists who had fallen off their bicycles, said a police statement.
Information from the two female victims and citizens on the waterfront trail stated that a male walking on the trail was observed yelling at cyclists as they passed him. The suspect used a telescopic camera pole and extended it into the path of cyclists in attempts to affect the lane of travel. As the two victims passed the male, his pole struck one of the bikes which caused the two to collide and fall off their bikes. Two pedestrians were also hit by the bikes. One of the pedestrians suffered minor injuries. The suspect left on foot without rendering any assistance to the involved parties,the statement said.
The female cyclists suffered minor injuries and one of them was taken by paramedics to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
Police searched the area with negative results.
The suspect is described as: male, white, 50-60 years old, 5’10’ tall, about 150 lbs. He wore black shorts, and a black and white leaf-patterned short sleeve button-up shirt. He was wearing a black hat on backwards and black sunglasses.
Investigators are looking for the public’s help to identify this male.
