Man charged in Whitby cyclist’s death

A Toronto man has been charged in connection with a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a Whitby cyclist.

Umar Owaisi, age 32, of Huntington Avenue in Toronto, has been charged with Careless Driving Causing Death and Turn Not in Safety, both under the Highway Traffic Act. He will appear in Provincial Offences Court in January 2021.

He was driving a FedEx delivery truck when the collision occurred on Baldwin Street and Canary Street in Whitby on July 7, 2020. The collision resulted in the death of cyclist Geoffrey Mitchell, age 53, of Whitby.
