Mandatory covid vaccination for Durham Region staff

Durham Region has announced it will introduce mandatory Covid-19 vaccination policy for employees.

“To continue to keep staff and the community safe, Durham Region is implementing a mandatory Covid-19 Vaccination Policy for all employees, including students and volunteers. All staff will be required to disclose their vaccination status by October 20; with proof of full vaccination status by December 20, 2021,” said Elaine Baxter-Trahair, Chief Administrative Officer for the Regional Municipality of Durham.

“Our community has shown great strength and resilience through the Covid-19 pandemic. People have come together to take care of one another; respect public health measures; protect the most vulnerable; and roll up sleeves to reduce pressure on our health-care system.

Durham Region will fulfill its Ontario Human Rights Code obligations to accommodate staff who are legally entitled to exemptions, including those who are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons.

“We have an important role to play in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19, especially as variants of concern continue to spread. We need to make sure staff are working in an environment that safeguards their health and safety. Under Ontario law, Durham Region must protect its workers. Community members who access our programs and services must also feel comfortable that they are doing so in a safe environment. We have seen how mass vaccinations help to reduce transmission. This new policy is one of the most effective ways to help keep people safe, as we work towards resuming full-service operations,” she added.
