Stunt motorcyclist hits police car… tries to flee

A 22-year-old man faces charges following a car meet in Whitby on Thursday evening.

On July 1, at approximately 11:00 pm, members from DRPS attended the area of South Blair Street and Water Street, in response to information of a car meet. Members of DRPS Traffic Services Branch were notified of three un-plated motorcycles heading westbound on Victoria Street towards Brock Street. The motorcycles were observed to be driving dangerously, police said.

When the motorcycles stopped at a red light at Shoal Point Road, an officer attempted to block the motorcycles by placing their unmarked police vehicle in front of them with the emergency lights activated. The drivers of the motorcycles accelerated, attempting to drive around the police vehicle, and one of the drivers jumped off his bike causing it to hit the side of the police vehicle while also striking the officer.

The suspect fled on foot but was taken into custody a short time later with the assistance of the K-9 unit and other responding officers.

The officer sustained minor injuries.

Bailey Grimes, age 22 of Pickering is charged with: Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance; Flight From Peace Officer; Assault With a Weapon; Assault Peace Officer; as well as 8 Highway Traffic Act Offences including Racing. The motorcycle was impounded for 14 days.
