A petition calling on the Government of Ontario to build a Highway 412 interchange at Rossland Road and address congestion on Highway 401 throughout Ajax and Durham Region, has been launched by Rob Cerjanec, Ajax Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP).
“As Ajax and Whitby continue to grow, pressure is increasing on roads that residents rely on every day. The petition calls for a new highway interchange to help people get around faster and reduce vehicle traffic on Lake Ridge Road, where serious collisions have raised safety concerns,” said the MPP.
Planned But Never Built
The petition notes that the Rossland Road interchange was previously approved through the Highway 407 East Environmental Assessment Study but subsequently deferred.
The petition also calls for a traffic study and solutions to eliminate Highway 401 bottlenecks across Ajax and Durham Region, where congestion and sudden slowdowns create daily challenges for drivers.
The Ministry of Transportation is undertaking a Detailed Design and an Environmental Assessment to widen westbound Highway 401 from Lake Ridge Road to Salem Road. This is a welcome step in the right direction but will take time, the petition said.
“Drivers are losing time in traffic every day, and bottlenecks force drivers to slow down suddenly,” said Cerjanec. “The province needs to deliver solutions to keep Ajax and Durham Region moving. Our communities are growing, and our transportation infrastructure needs to meet the demands of that growth.”
Cerjanec is encouraging residents to sign the petition and support the call for better highway access, safer roads, and less congestion. Residents can find the petition at: https://robcerjanecmpp.ca/petitions/hwy412
