No charges against below 12-year old who started fatal fire

The Durham Regional Police Homicide Unit has concluded the investigation into the fatal fire which occurred on Olive Avenue in Oshawa on March 22, 2021.

Four people had died as a result of the early morning fire.

“Based on the evidence collected, investigators believe the fire was started by a child under the age of 12,” said a police statement.

“Based on the totality of the circumstances and in accordance with legislation, no charges will be laid in relation to this incident,” it added.

Investigators worked in conjunction with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal and Oshawa Fire Services to complete a thorough investigation.

Durham Regional Police is not seeking additional evidence in relation to this incident, the statement said.
