One of three who used copy cop car in failed carjacking held

Durham Police have arrested a male who was involved in an attempted carjacking using vehicles that resembled unmarked police cars in Pickering.

On Sunday, June 9, at about 11:45 pm, members of West Division responded to a 911 call near the intersection of Taunton Road and New Whites Road. The caller reported that three individuals had tried to steal their vehicle at gunpoint.

The victim was traveling eastbound on Taunton Road when a pickup truck pulled up behind his vehicle and activated flashing lights which resembled an unmarked police car. At the same time, a second vehicle also approached, which also activated flashing lights.

Three males approached the victim’s vehicle, one of whom was believed to have a firearm, and attempted to gain entry into the victim’s car. The victim did not believe them to be police officers as they did not observe any police identifiers on the males. The victim was able to maneuver their vehicle around the suspect vehicles and flee the area.

On Friday, October 25, members of the Robbery Unit attended a residence in Richmond Hill and took a male into custody, without incident. This investigation is ongoing, and two suspects remain outstanding.

The man, age 21 of No Fixed Address was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone who was in the area that witnessed any of the interaction, or anyone who may have cellphone, dashcam, or surveillance video is asked to contact police.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Crosbie of the Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5360.
