Even as smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario is continuing to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility, outdoor programs across southern Durham continue to be cancelled.
As a result of the high air quality warning, Oshawa advised of the following recreation program cancellations/modifications:
- Summer playground program is cancelled
- Camp Samac Pool is closed
- Morning swimming lessons for Camp Samac Pool will be rescheduled to the Oshawa Community Credit Union Pool located at Delpark Homes Centre
- Evening swimming lessons at Camp Samac Pool are cancelled
- All leisure programs, including drop-in aquafit at Camp Samac Pool are cancelled
- Lakeview Park Beach East will not be supervised
- Summer camp programs will continue with indoor activities
- The July 16 Events in the Park event has also been relocated from Memorial Park to the Arts Resource Centre, Auditorium, at 45 Queen Street.
Outdoor programming was cancelled, said Clarington, and Orono Park Pool was again closed due to poor air quality.
To protect the safety of our participants and staff, municipal outdoor recreation programs, including Families in the Park and Orono Park Pool drop-in swims, are cancelled today, Thursday, July 16, due to poor air quality. Clarington Camps will remain indoors, said the municipality.
Clarington staff who are required to work outdoors have been provided with personal protective equipment to help reduce exposure to airborne particulate matter associated with wildfire smoke, it added.
Poor Air Quality May Persist Into Weekend
Environment Canada said conditions may temporarily improve Friday for some areas, however poor air quality may persist into the weekend.
During heavy smoke conditions, everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or health status, it pointed out.
