Oshawa flags at half-mast for Bruce McArthur

The City of Oshawa has extended condolences after the passing of former Councillor Bruce McArthur on December 26 at the age of 81, after a spirited battle with cancer.

McArthur is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lillie Bolton and his children, Jo-Ann (Ted Scott), Barry (Mikiko Shibata), Brent (Liz Schroder), and step-daughter Kelly Bolton. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Ann, Megann and Cole, siblings Frances Fallis and Harold Silver.

McArthur worked for General Motors as a tool and die maker for 30 years and also started a successful retail operation, Ring Fare Inc., which included locations in Toronto, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa.

McArthur was first elected to City Council in 1973 and served as both Oshawa Councillor and Durham Regional Councillor from 1976 to 1985.

In 2010, he was appointed as the City’s representative to the Oshawa Port Authority (formerly the Oshawa Harbour Commission) and most recently served as a board member of the newly amalgamated Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority.

A Celebration of Life will be held for McArthur on Sunday, January 12 at 1:00 pmat DeStefano Funeral Home (1289 Keith Ross Dr., Oshawa). Additionally, condolences may be placed online.

Flags at city facilities will be lowered and will remain at half-mast on Saturday, January 11 and Sunday, January 12.
