Durham Police has provided tips on how to properly dispose of unwanted guns. The tips came after a handgun was brought into one of the police stations on Thursday.
The Whitby resident who brought the 9 mm handgun in for disposal did not want the weapon in his house. He brought the unloaded handgun into Central West Division, located at 480 Taunton Road East in Whitby at 9 pm. The handgun was turned over and a report was filed.
“For the safety of employees and the citizens involved, please do not bring firearms, or weapons of any kind into a police station for destruction. Signs are posted in all police stations advising the public of the proper procedure,” said a police statement.
“The proper procedure is to contact us on our administrative line at 1-888-579-1520 and make arrangements for an officer to attend your home, at your convenience, and pick up the item,” it added.
