Region begins study on how to expand Ajax plant water supply

The Region of Durham has begun conducting a Class Environmental Assessment Addendum (Class EA Addendum) for the Ajax Water Supply Plant (Ajax WSP) to expand the existing water supply plant, in the Town of Ajax.

“The Ajax WSP Project supports the region’s commitment to service excellence in high-quality treated water supply and availability for the Ajax/Pickering and Whitby/Oshawa/Courtice Water Supply Systems,” said a region statement.

The Class EA Addendum was initiated on October 24 and will be a multi-year project. This Class EA will be an addendum to the previously completed 1991 Class EA, the recommendations of which were not released with this statement.

The Ajax WSP is located at 75 Lake Driveway East in the Town of Ajax.

The region said the study is being conducted to identify a preferred alternative to expand the Ajax WSP to accommodate increased system demand as a result of community growth. The Class EA Addendum will consider future water supply needs, examine alternatives to renovate and expand the existing facility to meet these needs, and select a preferred alternative which minimizes risk to the community and environment.

It said timelines are subject to change throughout the duration of this multi-year project. It dis not provide an projected end date.
