Three Durham students receive $9,000 in scholarships

Municipal Retirees Organization Ontario (MROO) has awarded three students from Durham Region (Zone 4) $3,000 each to help with their university studies.

From Sunderland, Emily Phillips is studying Science in Agriculture (Animal Science) at the University of Guelph, from Uxbridge, Claire M. is studying Mechanical Engineering at Carleton University and Evan Miller of Whitby is studying Environmental Science and Education at Trent University.

This year, MROO has awarded in total $100,000 in scholarships to over 30 exceptional students across the province. The scholarships will support recipients in their post-secondary studies. All recipients are family members of current MROO members. Scholarships were awarded in each zone (there are nine MROO Zones) with recipients determined based on the number of applicants and specific eligibility criteria, including the student’s leadership skills, volunteer experience, and commitment to making a difference in their communities, said a press statement.

“MROO is proud to support our members and their families through the MROO Scholarship Program,” said Gerry Pedwell, Director of Zone 4. We know how much this helps students pay for their tuition, books, or their rent. We are very happy to support these exceptional students and their families! Congratulations to Emily, Claire and Evan!”
