In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Clarington Emergency and Fire Services responded to a house fire in Orono just east of Highway 35/115.
Firefighters responded to the emergency call, which came in at 3:08 a.m. When they arrived on the scene, flames were visible. Both residents were able to get out safely. A man was taken to the hospital for a medical checkup. In total, multiple fire trucks responded, including six pumpers, an aerial and four tanker trucks. Fire crews were able to gain control of the fire quickly with no injuries. This morning, crews are still working on dousing hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Following the overnight house fire, Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir is reminding residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms on every level of their home ahead of the holiday season.
“As we approach the holidays, many residents are decorating their homes with lights, candles and trees; it is crucial that each home has working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. It is the law, and it can save lives,” said Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir.
“Test your alarms. Have a home escape plan ready and ensure you also have carbon monoxide alarms near all sleeping areas. These are simple measures that will help keep your family safe as you celebrate the holidays,” added Chief Weir.
