Speeding Vehicle Strikes Bus, Hydro Pole, Porch

A Listowel-area motorist is facing multiple charges after speeding on Columbus Road in Oshawa, striking a bus, sheering off a hydro pole and then coming to rest against a residential porch on Sunday.

On September 8 at 1:50 pm, officers were called to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Simcoe Street North and Columbus Road in Oshawa.

Witnesses said the suspect vehicle was travelling eastbound on Columbus Road at a high rate of speed and passed through a red traffic signal before striking a southbound charter bus on Simcoe Street. The suspect vehicle then continued east before losing control, striking and sheering off a hydro pole, spinning into a tree and then finally coming to rest by striking the front porch of a residence.

Officers located the driver and vehicle east of the intersection. The driver refused to surrender and became involved in a physical confrontation with officers. A Conducted Energy Weapon was deployed on two occasions and was ineffective. The suspect was eventually subdued.

The 48-year-old male driver was taken to Lakeridge Health – Oshawa for treatment of minor injuries, but was also held for a mental health assessment. He will be charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest and Breach of Probation.

No significant injuries were reported. The porch of the residence was damaged. The hydro pole remained upright due to the tension in the lines. Columbus Road remained closed for several hours so the scene could be processed.
