Strong gusts of up to 80 kmh forecast for afternoon

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Alert for Durham Region, saying strong winds are forecast to develop today (Thursday) afternoon.

Saturday night strong winds of up to 100 kmh downed trees and wires causing widespread power outages across the region. Only yesterday, Scugog announced it had cleared its trails of fallen trees and branches.

Now the region is bracing for a fresh lashing as strong southwesterly winds gusting to 70 to 80 kmh are forecast. These strong winds will continue into early evening before weakening early Thursday night, said Environment Canada.

High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Local power outages are also possible, it added.

Waste Collection Day

Thursday is also a waste collection day in several parts of the region.

City of Oshawa notified residents that if Thursday is their waste collection day, they must try to secure materials by placing heavier items on top to prevent them from blowing away.
