Support those with disabilities and help raise $50,000

Oshawa Power recently its 2nd annual charity golf tournament in support of Their Opportunity, a national children’s charity.

But if you missed out on it, do not worry. There’s still another chance to impact your community and enjoy a day of golf.

B. Moore Financial are holding their first-ever charity golf tournament  in support of Melly’s Market & Café. This will be taking place on July 31 at Deer Creek Golf Course in Ajax.

Melly’s Market & Café is a registered charity and non-profit Workplace, Café and Market. It provides a unique, comprehensive training program to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to gain access to employment opportunities.

In Canada, only about 1 in 4 adults with an intellectual or developmental disability are employed. That gap often starts early. While many teens build confidence through part-time jobs, youth with disabilities are less likely to access the same formative work experiences. By the time they graduate, often at 21, many who want to work and can work are still missing the experience employers expect. That’s where Melly’s comes in.

Their vision is to see individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities actively engaged and represented in all facets of community life as both employees and customers fully integrated and participating. They hope that with the right support, everyone can find their place in the world of work, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse society.

The impact Melly’s Workplace, Cafe and Market have had so far in the Durham community:

  • Over 143 youth and adults served through our learning curriculum
  • Over 81 and counting apprentices have received paid work opportunities at Melly’s
  • 31 (and counting) employment opportunities for our apprentices in the community
  • $25,000 supporting disability-led businesses, and their products – available to shop in our market

The tournament hopes to bring together local professionals for a fantastic day of golf, networking, and giving back to a great community cause.

What to expect:
  • A full round of golf  at Deer Creek Golf in Ajax, Ontario.
  • On-course contests
  • Fun challenges throughout the day, including Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive.
  • Prizes
  • Dinner & awards: a meal, recognition, and tournament highlights.
  • Community impact

Every registration, sponsorship, and donation helps expand opportunities for adults with disabilities in Durham Region. The tournament is described as “a celebration of connection, mentorship, and opportunity.”

The first year goal for this tournament is to raise $50,000 for Melly’s Workplace to help them purchase new equipment for the store for training and production. Further enabling Melly’s Place to deliver impactful programs and experiences throughout the year.

Ways you can participate and help:
  • Register to golf
  • event or hole sponsorships
  • raffle and auction donations
  • or dinner-only attendance

Sponsorship opportunities and player spots are beginning to fill quickly. Help create meaningful, inclusive, and memorable experiences for the youth
and community members by considering joining or donating.

Oshawa Power’s 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament

This year, golfers including employees, sponsors, and special guest Doug Gilmour, came together to raise $30,000 for Their Opportunity, a charity dedicated to removing barriers for youth participation in sport across Durham Region and beyond.

Their Opportunity is a national children’s charity that delivers & subsidizes local sport for development & community engagement programming.

Oshawa Power stated that they are “proud to partner with organizations that help our local children participate in sport and recreation that otherwise could not.”

The event; hosted at Sunnybrae Golf Club on June 26  brought together sponsors and employees for a fun day on the golf course while raising funds to support programs that provide opportunities for kids in the community.

Daniel Arbour, President & CEO of Oshawa Power said “This is our second year, and the success of this event would not be possible without the dedication of our team, financial support from our suppliers and partners, including special guest, Doug Gilmour, Hockey Hall of Famer and
former NHL all-star. We are incredibly grateful at this level of participation” said . This is a reflection of what we can accomplish when we come together for a common cause.”

Planning is already underway for next year’s tournament, with organizers looking forward to building on this year’s success and continuing to make a positive impact in the community.
