Swindler of elderly lady’s $400,000+ let go on undertaking

A male fraudster who swindled an elderly lady out of more than $400,000 has been charged and let go on an undertaking by Durham police.

An Oshawa man is facing charges following a lengthy investigation into the alleged financial exploitation of an elderly woman in Ajax.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, members of the West Division responded to a residence near Windsor Avenue and Elm Street in Ajax for a well-being check after concerns were raised about the welfare of an elderly woman and the possibility of elder abuse.

As a result of information provided by the victim, investigators from the DRPS Older Adult Support Investigative Services Unit (Oasis) commenced an investigation into allegations of fraud and theft. Following a lengthy investigation, it was determined the victim had suffered financial losses exceeding $400,000.

On September 29, investigators arrested the suspect without incident.

Police are concerned there may be other victims and are releasing a photo and the name of the accused at www.drps.ca.

The suspect from Oshawa, was charged and released on an undertaking.
