Ontario-wide school strike from today averted

Cupe has reached a ‘tentative’ agreement with Ontario government – and with it the threat of a school strike from today – has receded.

Canadian Union of Public Employees (Cupe) represents some 55,000 education sector workers in Ontario.

“I am pleased to announce that a tentative agreement has been reached between the Crown, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (Cupe), and the school board trustee associations, that keeps kids in class,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education.

“This is welcome news for families, students, and workers alike, as schools remain opened across our province.
We will continue to negotiate in good faith to ensure students in this province remain in class,” he added.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said: “Throughout this process our goal has been to establish agreements that respect taxpayers, students and families, while also recognizing the important contributions of our front-line education workers. Our government worked tirelessly at the bargaining table to achieve this goal and as a result two million students will remain in the classroom where they belong.”

As the threat of a school strike loomed, the City of Oshawa prepared day camps and extended programming.

Now that the school closures are not likely to occur, Oshawa had promised registrants a full refund and the extended programming at The Rec Room and Youth Room will not be offered.
