Three officers hurt as KFC patron turns violent

An Oshawa man was taken for a mental health assessment after having to be forcibly removed from an Oshawa restaurant on Saturday night.

On October 26 at 8:15 pm, officers were called to the KFC restaurant on King Street East in Oshawa. A distraught male in his 40s was causing a disturbance inside the restaurant, pacing back and forth and at one point filling his backpack with ice and pop from the pop machine. He went outside and returned with the lid from a garbage can and started spilling pop from the pop machine on the floor. Staff tried to calm him down for about 20 minutes, but all attempts failed. The manager asked him to leave, but he refused.

Officers attended to speak to the male and he became enraged. They attempted to arrest him for causing a disturbance and he took a swing at officers and actively resisted arrest. A Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed successfully and the male was eventually handcuffed and shackled. He was carried to the back of a cruiser.

On the way to Lakeridge Health Oshawa for a mental health assessment, the male began smashing his face against the partition and biting off pieces of foam. That cruiser later had to be taken out of service for repairs. The male was held at hospital for a mental health assessment. His name is not being released.

Three officers sustained minor injuries during the apprehension, but were able to continue working.
