Construction value issued in Oshawa remained strong during the pandemic, with the city setting two building records in June 2021:
- Highest number of permits issued in June on record with 318 (surpassing record of 310 set in 1976).
- Highest number of Accessory Apartments issued in June on record with 19 (surpassing 9 set in 2020).
During the month of June, the city issued 318 building permits for a total of almost $55.3 million in construction value. Of that total, $50 million relates to Residential construction, $2.7 million to Commercial construction, $2.0 million to Industrial construction and $621,000 to Governmental/Institutional construction.
An additional 387 square meters of new commercial floor space was created in June. There were 150 new residential units consisting of 91 townhouse dwellings, 40 single-detached dwellings and 19 accessory apartments.
Oshawa’s year-to-date total construction value is $305 million which includes residential values ($268.9 million) well surpassing those in 2020. The total number of permits issued this year is more than double that of last year.
“As one of Canada’s fastest growing communities, Oshawa’s construction boom continues at a steady pace setting two more building records in June,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “With cranes in our skies and shovels in the ground, the City of Oshawa is attracting investment from commercial and industrial development creating thousands of local jobs and welcoming homebuyers who have discovered this is one of the best communities in which to live, work and learn.”

“Oshawa’s hot building stats coincided with June 2021 being the warmest month on record in North America,” said Councillor Rosemary McConkey, Vice-Chair, Development Services Committee. “The city’s residential record relates largely to Tribute pulling permits in the Windfields development for its townhouse developments on Magdalen Path and Royal Northern Path; and its singles on Orchestrate, Craftsman, Stallion and Windfields Farm Dr. West. Also, some of the permit increase relates to the Treasurer Hill project near Kingsway College, with new singles on Apollo St. and Fleetwood Dr. The individual applications for 19 accessory apartment permits in one month around the city are an eye opener which underscores that trend, given there were a total of 150 permits for accessory units (basement apartments) in Oshawa last year.”
