UPDATE: Dead cyclist was hit by delivery truck

A 53-year-old cyclist, who was killed in a collision in Whitby Tuesday morning, was struck by a FedEx ground delivery truck, Durham police said in an update yesterday.

The investigation is ongoing. Police would like to hear from any witnesses to this collision, who have not already spoken to police.

On July 7 at about 11:03 am, members of Central West Division were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision involving a cyclist and a delivery truck on Baldwin Street and Canary Crescent in Whitby, said the police.

The male cyclist was travelling northbound on Baldwin Street in the northbound lane, when he was struck by a FedEx ground delivery truck. The truck was westbound on Canary Crescent, attempting to make a left turn to go southbound on Baldwin Street, when it struck the cyclist, the update said.

The driver of the delivery vehicle stopped and provided assistance to the cyclist, and was co-operative with police.

The cyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The cyclist was identified as Geoffrey Mitchell of Whitby.

Members of the Collision Investigation Unit were called and the roadway was closed for several hours to collect evidence and conduct their investigation.
