Whitby Assault: DRPS to ‘Take Back the Walk’

The Central West Division Community Safety Advisory Committee of the The Durham Police Regional Service (DRPS) is organizing a virtual “Take Back the Walk” on Thursday, August 27, 2020.

It is in response to the brutal attack on a Whitby woman on July 28, 2020, which sent shockwaves through the community and left many citizens feeling vulnerable and unsafe. DRPS officers want to start healing these wounds and supporting the victim by the event.

It will help provide our community with a sense of safety, knowing that violent crimes will not be tolerated and our streets are safe to walk on. We would also like to raise awareness of our Surveillance Camera Registry and encourage citizens to sign up, said a DRPS statement.

A small group of Officers and Committee members will participate in the August 27th walk in Whitby and are encouraging everyone to do their own walks, in their own neighbourhoods (given the current pandemic).

Members of the community joining the virtual walk campaign can post photos on social media using the tag @DRPS and the hashtag #takebackthewalk. When walking, be safe by walking in pairs, carrying a cellphone, letting someone know your route and sticking to well-lit paths. Report any suspicious activity to the police.

Information about the Security Camera Registry: Residents and business owners in Durham Region have the option to register the location of their security cameras with police. Doing so may assist officers when they are investigating a crime that takes place in the range of the cameras. To register your camera, visit www.drps.ca and from the menu along with the top click on Online Reporting – Report A Crime – Security Camera Registry.
