Whitby gets 10 kg honey from its Rooftop Beehive

The staff of the Town of Whitby and its partner Alvéole have been busy as bees harvesting honey from the town’s rooftop beehive.

Earlier this year, during Pollinator Week (June 17 to 23), the town transformed the vacant space on the rooftop of the Town Hall into a home for honeybees – making Whitby one of the first municipalities in Canada to own a beehive.

The sweet fruits of the honeybees labour were harvested yielding more than 10 kilograms (100 jars) of fresh honey. The honey will be used by the town as giveaways at events and gatherings.

The urban beehive was installed by the town on the rooftop of Town Hall as part of its commitment to being a “Bee City” and protecting local pollinators.
