Whitby tops as Durham’s ‘Best Community’… next is?

Whitby has topped the rankings of Durham region’s best community in the latest Maclean’s Canada’s Best Communities rankings.

Whitby came in at No. 55 among the list of 415 Canadian communities, with its amenities, culture and communities, and weather contributing to its ranking. Whitby was also ranked as the 28th Best Place to Raise a Family by Maclean’s Magazine.

“These scores recognize what those of us who live here already know – that Whitby is one of the best communities in Canada,” said Mayor Don Mitchell. “From our waterfront and more than 120 parks to our first-class recreation facilities and growing number of entertainment destinations – and everything in between – Whitby is a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

Durham Rankings

Clarington was just ten rungs down at No. 66 with demographics, amenities and low crime giving it the score.

Ajax came in third in Durham and No. 96 Canada-wide scoring well for its amenities, demographics and weather.

Uxbridge was next (Canada rank No. 145) with culture and community, weather and low crime helping it rise above Pickering at No. 147. Pickering was ranked for its amenities, weather and low crime.

Oshawa followed at No. 179, ranking high on amenities, weather and demographics, followed by Scugog  at No. 197 (Culture and community, crime and health)

Brock came in at No. 297 just after Montreal helped by its low crime, culture and community and taxes.

Out of 415 communities, Port Hope ranked No. 332 with weather, health and culture its most prominent assets.

The Top-Five

  1. Burlington
  2. Grimby
  3. Ottawa
  4. Oakville
  5. New Tecumseth

The top-5 were dominated by Ontario communities with nearby Toronto coming in at No. 19.

To determine the rankings, Maclean’s collected data on 415 towns and cities across the country and compared them in the following categories: affordability, population growth, taxes, commute, crime, wealth and economy, weather, access to health care, amenities, culture and community.
