While issuing an Extreme Cold warning yesterday, Environment Canada said Durham could experience wind chill values near minus 30°C into Saturday morning.
Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter, it said.
“Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” it advised.
The Durham Region Health Department has extended an Extreme Cold Weather Alert into the morning of Sunday, February 6.
Extreme Cold Weather Alerts are issued by Durham Health when Environment Canada forecasts a temperature of minus 15 degrees Celsius or colder, and/or a wind chill of minus 20 degrees Celsius or colder.
