Windrow scheme offers residents snow clearing support

With  winter here, the Town of Whitby has renewed its Windrow Program which provides snow-clearing assistance to seniors and residents with mobility challenges.

A ‘snow windrow’ is the pile of snow left at the bottom of a driveway after the snow plow has cleared the road.

Through its Windrow Program, the town clears the snow windrow at the base of the driveways of program participants, as well as any sidewalks in front or to the side of the property. Snow clearing on municipal sidewalks next to the property takes place within 24 hours after a 5 centimetre snowfall ends. The driveway windrow snow clearing service occurs 36 hours after a 10 centimetre snowfall ends, said a Whitby announcement.

To be eligible for the service a resident  must be registered with the Whitby Seniors’ Activity Centre as either a resident over the age of 65 with no able-bodied person under the age of 65 living in the residence, or a resident who is certified by a medical doctor to be disabled with no able-bodied person living in the residence under the age of 65.
