Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Traffic Services yesterday reported a monitoring blitz across school zones which netted several parents and their kids travelling in a car without seat belts on.
“Officers from DRPS East Division issued 15 seat belt tickets at one school. A disappointing start to the ‘In The Zone’ school initiative,” said a police alert.
Earlier its reported that in just 30 minutes at an East Division (Clarington) school, 14 seat belt tickets were issued in relation to parents and their kids not being buckled up during the morning rush.
“Please remember passengers under 16 are the driver’s responsibility – make sure everyone is buckled up and be safe,” police said.
The March break has ended and students returned to classes on Monday.
DRPS West Division started the ‘In The Zone’ initiative, across Ajax and Pickering yesterday.
“We are enforcing speed limits at schools for the entire week. Please, slow down as kids return to their studies ,” said police.
DRPS North Division officers too are conducting an ‘In the Zone” back-to-school safety initiative this week.
“We already charged a driver for speeding 62 km above the speed limit,” said the police.
The motorist’s vehicle was impounded for 14 days and driving licence suspended for 30 days, they added.
