Travel Alert: Roadworks on Simcoe Street South resume

The Regional Municipality of Durham and the City of Oshawa have announced the reumption of roadworks on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa.

The regional municipality has begun construction for the replacement of existing watermain, sanitary and storm sewers, services connections, road reconstruction, and pavement rehabilitation on Simcoe Street South (Regional Road 2) from Olive Avenue to 20 metres north of Metcalfe Street in the City of Oshawa, said a notice.

The region’s contractor, Hard-Co Construction Ltd., will mobilize the week of March 18 (today). Work is expected to be completed by fall 2024. Unfavorable weather conditions may influence the work schedule.

Lane Restrictions and Road Closures: Simcoe Street South, from Olive Avenue to north of Metcalfe Street will be reduced to one lane in the northbound direction. Access to side streets located within the construction zone staging will be limited, at times, during construction. A signed detour route will be in place for the duration of the project.

The intersections of John Street and Gibb/Elm Street will experience intermittent road closures to through traffic in both eastbound and westbound directions. Additional advanced public notices will be issued confirming future closure dates and detour routes.

Municipal construction projects include the use of equipment which may cause noticeable noise and vibration for nearby residents and businesses. The region said it realizes that the construction work will be disruptive and will make every effort to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Businesses: Businesses will remain open for the duration of construction. Durham Region offers an overview of what businesses can expect during construction, and some tips on how to minimize inconvenience on your business, at durham.ca/OpenForBusiness.

Parking: On street parking will be not permitted on Simcoe Street South (Regional Road 2) during construction. Access to driveways will be maintained whenever possible. Notification will be given to those if vehicles need to be moved out of the driveway. If you are unable to access your driveway due to this work, a permit is required to park on the street. To obtain an Occasional Use Parking Permit, go to www.oshawa.ca/parkingpermit or contact Service Oshawa at 905-436-3311 and notify them quoting contract number D2023-49.
