The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate following a pursuit in Whitby that led to a serious collision involving a stolen police cruiser on Sunday evening.
On March 7, at about 7:11 pm, DRPS responded to a suspicious person call in the area of Victoria Street in Whitby. While investigating the incident, a police cruiser was stolen. The stolen cruiser struck a civilian vehicle near Garden Street and Dundas Street in Whitby. The two occupants of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, said a police report.
The cruiser caught fire and was gutted.
Jesse Johnson, a 30-year-old male of Sarnia faces numerous charges including: Break and Enter with Intent; Theft over $5,000; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000; Fail to Stop for Police; Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm x2; Possession of Firearm Obtained by Crime and Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order. He was held for a bail hearing.
