Clarington offers grants to improve look of downtowns

Clarington has announced plans to provide grants to downtowns to help improve the look of the municipality.

The Municipality of Clarington has a series of Community Improvement Plans (CIP) that allow the municipality to provide financial incentives to downtown business and property owners. CIPs for Bowmanville, Newcastle, and Orono include grant programs that encourage investments that improve the appearance and function of buildings in the historic downtowns, said a statement.

To date, over $1 million in grant funding has been provided, resulting in building code and accessibility upgrades, façade improvements to historic and aging buildings, and upgraded signage that contributes to the vibrancy of Clarington’s central business areas as viable and attractive places to shop and access local services, it said.

The Courtice Main Street Community Improvement Plan encourages new, quality-designed high-density development and redevelopment along the Highway 2 Regional Corridor in Courtice. Available programs under the Courtice CIP include a development charge grant program and a tax increment grant program.
