Whitby outdoor ice rink opens for enthusiasts

Whitby announced the opening of a natural ice rink at Brooklin Memorial Park (in the tennis courts) – 67 Winchester Road East, Brooklin on Friday.

Staff are working on opening a second natural ice rink at Peel Park (in the lacrosse box) – 307 Trent Street East, Whitby as soon as it is possible, said a notice.

It said natural ice rinks are a great way to stay fit and have fun this winter. Here’s what you need to know before you go:

  • The rinks operate between 10 am and 10 pm daily
  • Users must limit their use time to thirty minutes when others are waiting
  • Each rink is first come, first serve and has a capacity limit in place to help ensure safe physical distancing requirements:
    • 40 people are permitted on the Brooklin Memorial Park natural ice rink at one time
    • 60 people are permitted on the Peel Park natural ice rink at one time

Rink users are required to follow all posted safety signage and Covid-19 public health guidelines. Town staff will make visits to the rinks daily to monitor capacity and provide any necessary ice maintenance.

When visiting the rinks, please remember:

  • All participants are required to wear a face mask
  • Ensure safe physical distancing of 2 metres or 6 feet apart
  • Bring your own skates
  • Come dressed for the weather
  • Keep your belongings on you at all times

It is also highly recommended to wear a helmet while on the ice.

“We hope you enjoy the new natural ice rinks, Whitby! Be sure to share photos of how you are enjoying the ice rinks this #WhitbyWinter with us on social media @TownofWhitby,” said the notice.

Whitby’s outdoor natural ice rinks are sponsored by the Great Canadian Meat Company.
