The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said police presence has been increased around synagogues, Jewish community centres, and Chanukah events throughout Durham Region.
It termed as “deeply troubling” the terror shooting at a Chanukah celebration at the Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, that left at least 15 dead and 40 in hospital. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and members of the Jewish community during this difficult time.”
DRPS said: “We understand that incidents like this may cause concern locally. Out of an abundance of caution, residents will notice an increased police presence around synagogues, Jewish community centres, and Chanukah events throughout Durham Region.”
The Bondi Beach attackers were a 50-year-old and 24-year-old father and son. The father, now deceased, had six firearms licensed to him. New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed police are not looking for a third offender.
DRPS stated that they remain committed to the safety and well-being of all communities. They will continue proactive patrols at places of worship and community gathering spaces to help ensure a strong sense of safety and support for everyone.
“While there is no known threat to Durham Region at this time, the DRPS remains vigilant and continues to work closely with community partners,” said the police.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity or has concerns is encouraged to contact the Durham Regional Police at 905-579-1520. In an emergency, please call 911.
