Urgent demolition order for Harwood unit under receivership

The Town of Ajax Chief Building Official (CBO) has issued an Emergency Order for the demolition of 226 Harwood Avenue South following a significant fire at the Ajax Plaza on February 2.

A structural assessment has determined that the fire severely compromised the building’s structural integrity, making demolition necessary for public safety, said a town statement.

The demolition was scheduled to begin on February 16 and will continue for about one week. The work is not anticipated to affect access to businesses, including roads, parking, or entrances, the town said.

Quick Facts from ToA:

  • Ajax Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) responded to a structure fire at about 2 am on February 2.
  • 226 Harwood Avenue South is one of several properties in the Ajax Plaza currently under receivership. A court-appointed receiver is overseeing the management of these properties until a final decision on ownership is made by the courts.
  • A third-party demolition company has been retained to manage and carry out the demolition. Additionally, a site engineer will be on location to oversee the demolition and associated safety measures.
  • At this time, the town does not anticipate any disruptions to other businesses. Specifically, the demolition will not affect access to businesses, including roads, parking, or entrances, and no businesses are required to vacate.
  • Measures will be in place to control dust and reduce noise impact.
  • The demolition area will be clearly marked and fenced off to ensure safety.
