After chasing DRT, Brock turns to relax taxi rules

After lobbying for better Durham Region Transit (DRT) connectivity for its spread-out rural community (see below), the Township of Brock has taken an alternative route by relaxing taxi rules.

During a recent meeting, Brock Council approved the new Taxicab By-law which removes the requirement for a license from the Township of Brock for a taxi company to conduct pickups and drop offs within the municipality.

“Taxi companies will still be required to hold a valid license from another municipality to conduct their business, and licensing procedures,” said a Brock report.

“This amendment will support consistent and equitable transportation options for all residents of the region and is intended to enhance the availability and accessibility of transportation services in the township,” it added.

The issue is so serious that, it seems almost on a weekly basis, top Brock officials are having conversations with DRT top brass, former Brock Mayor Walter Schummer told Durham Post in the first quarter of 2024.

At that time he had pointed out that there were no fixed routes in Brock. “A lot of people in the vast municipality don’t have a car, either can’t afford a car or don’t have access to a car. But to get to almost anywhere around you need some kind of transportation,” he said.
