Shot man charged, DRPS says it was ‘armed person call’

A male is facing charges after “an armed person call” in Oshawa, according to a Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) statement issued yesterday.

The incident took place on January 18 during which a knife-wielding man and an officer were shot by another officer. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked their mandate and took over the investigation, according to a SIU statement issued on January 18 (see below).

The SIU statement said the DRPS attended a residence on Cedar Street in Oshawa for a “mental health call”.

However, DRPS yesterday said a 27-year old from Oshawa has been charged with: Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon, and Weapons Dangerous. He was held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

“The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate. DRPS is fully cooperating with the SIU and cannot release further details regarding this incident. Anyone with questions or information about this incident is asked to contact the Special Investigations Unit at 1-800-787-8529,” said the DRPS.
