Jewel thief among carjacker teens who ram cruiser, hit tree

Durham police yesterday said three male youth are facing charges after being located in a stolen vehicle in Whitby.

On Saturday, January 17, around 8:45 am, members of Central West Division were on proactive patrol when they observed a stolen Honda SUV in the area of Twin Streams Drive and Country Lane.

Officers attempted to block the vehicle; however, it fled the area, hitting a police cruiser.  The suspect vehicle collided with a tree a short distance away and three suspects fled the SUV on foot, police said.

Officers, with the assistance of the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, K9 Unit, Tactical Support Unit, and Robbery Unit, located all three suspects who were taken into custody.

One of the suspects was found to be responsible for a jewelry store robbery that occurred on Thursday, January 15 at the Peoples Jewelers located in the Shops at Pickering City Center, as well as an attempted robbery that occurred on Thursday, January 15, at Oshawa Jewellery located in the Oshawa Center. This investigation is ongoing.

The suspects are two 16-year old males and a 14-year old male, all from Whitby. They were all released on undertaking.
