As barbecue season heats up, Ajax Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to take precautions to help prevent fires on decks and porches.
“Always position BBQs well away from deck railing, wood fences and vinyl siding to reduce fire risk. Always ensure your grill is clean and never leave it unattended while in use,” said Melissa Balson, Public Educator with Ajax Fire and Emergency Services.
The fire department has issued several quick tips to help residents grill safely and reduce the risk of fire:
- Place your grill on a level surface away from the home, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging branches.
- Keep the area behind your BBQ clear — this is where hot gases escape.
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
- Regularly clean the burners and base to prevent grease fires.
- After barbecuing, turn off the gas valve first, then the burner controls to prevent gas from remaining in the hose.
- Let the BBQ cool completely before closing the lid.
In addition to BBQ safety, residents are also reminded not to extinguish cigarettes in flowerpots or planters, which may contain flammable materials such as peat moss, shredded wood, and bark. Use a proper ashtray or a non-combustible metal container instead.
