Anti-trespass mats for Durham rail crossings

This summer Metrolinx is working to improve safety at Durham level crossings on the Lakeshore East Corridor.

It will be installing anti-trespass panels at every level crossing on the corridor, making it difficult for pedestrians to enter the right-of-way. The panels surround the tracks and feature a round cone-shaped pattern on top, Metrolinx said.

While the work is underway, residents may notice maintenance crews and machinery in the corridor for about a week.

“We do our best to complete track maintenance during the day, but work on this project will need to proceed overnight while rail traffic is lightest. Residents may notice noise from the machinery and some ambient light from the site. The use of back-up beepers, a vital safety measure, will be limited to essential work only,” said a Metrolinx statement.

The installation at Rodd Avenue level crossing in Pickering was completed last week, it added.
