Back-to-School and other tips from Durham Police

Durham Police is reminding everyone that “as we get set for the return to school on Tuesday, motorists and pedestrians are reminded to put the phone down until you arrive at your destination. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings while walking, as there will be an increase in traffic next week.”

Tip 2: Remember to lock your vehicle when you’re #BackToSchool shopping this weekend.

Tip 3: The school year begins tomorrow and motorists are asked to watch for children travelling to school on foot, bicycle or school bus. Drivers should always stop for school buses when lights and signals are activated. Doing otherwise could mean a $490 fine.

Tip 4: Officers will be out patrolling school zones this week as part of the “In the Zone” campaign. Last year officers wrote 1,029 tickets for for driving offences and are asking motorists to give themselves extra time, slow down, be patient and put the phone away.

Tip 5: Have you noticed it’s getting darker earlier? Turn your headlights on when driving in the early morning and early evening. Headlights allow you to see the road better and helps other drivers see you! Your daytime running lights aren’t the same as headlights.

And lastly, motorists heading home from the long weekend and preparing for the increase in traffic next week are reminded not to drink or consume cannabis while driving, warned the Durham Police.

  1. I constantly see people texting while driving. They’re usually driving like idiots, floating in and out of their lane, not signalling, speeding up then slowing down, just generally not engaged in what’s going on around them. I’d really like to hop out of my car and punch them right in the face.
