Be ready if the power goes out this winter

Winter is in full force and emergency situations are possible.

The Region of Durham has asked residents to “be ready if the power goes out this winter!”

It has suggestions on how to create emergency kits for the most common emergent situations during winter.

“We are responsible for our own safety and survival for the first 72 hours of an emergency. Once you have an emergency plan, you’ll need to make emergency kits. You should make vehicle kits for your cars, a pet kit for your family pet, and kits for people with disabilities or special needs. Check your kits often and restock them if you need to. Everyone in your family should know where to find your emergency plan and your emergency kits.

These instructions can be found at Emergency Kits.

Emergencies can happen quickly, without warning, at any time of day and in any season. Emergency preparedness starts at home. Make sure you and your family are prepared for any emergency.

The Are You Ready? guide outlines the four simple steps you can follow:

  1. Have a plan in case you are told to stay inside or to leave quickly.
  2. Know the risks where you live, work and play; it will help you be better prepared.
  3. Make a kit, or several kits, of basic items you will need in an emergency.
  4. Stay in touch with your emergency contacts and get reliable information during an emergency.

If you live, work, play, or go to school near the nuclear plants in Clarington or Pickering, take some time to learn about how you can prepare to be safe.

The Region of Durham and its eight local area municipalities have emergency programs and plans in place. Plans are regularly reviewed and practised.
