Bear spray use forces evacuation at school in Oshawa

Durham police said a teen is facing charges after spraying another boy with bear spray at a school in Oshawa.

On Thursday, February 26, around 11:45 am, members of Central East Division responded to an assault call at Grove School located at 240 Simcoe Street South.

Two young boys were involved in a physical altercation when one of the boys sprayed the other with bear spray. Police arrived on scene a short time later and located both the suspect and victim. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Both the suspect and victim were treated for minor injuries and contamination from the bear spray.

Students and staff were evacuated from the school as a result of contamination from the bear spray, police said.

A 17-year-old boy from Whitby was charged and released on an undertaking.
