Police rescue distressed dog left in car during midday

As temperatures continue to rise across the region, Durham Police has responded to another incident of a dog left alone in a hot car.

On Wednesday July 17 at 12:45 pm, police responded to the parking lot of a plaza on Victoria Street East in Whitby. There were reports a dog was in distress inside a vehicle. According to witnesses, the dog was in the vehicle for about an hour. The windows were rolled down about three inches.

Officers managed to open the vehicle without breaking a window to retrieve the dog. The owner was located a short time later and issued a ticket for causing an animal to be in distress.

With high humidity levels expected over the next few days, police are reminding people to leave their pets at home while running errands.

According to the OSPCA the internal temperature of a vehicle is approximately double what it is outside and these conditions are extremely dangerous for animals.

If you witness an animal in distress in a vehicle, please contact local animal services or police.
