Car rams pole, hurt man airlifted, roads closed

Three people remain in stable condition in hospital following a motor vehicle collision in Whitby on Thursday morning.

At approximately 9:49 am on January 23, members of the Durham Regional Police Service responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision involving multiple vehicles. The collision occurred at the intersection of Thickson Road and Consumers Drive in Whitby.

Witnesses reported a Saturn sedan was southbound on Thickson Road when it swerved to avoid a collision with a northbound vehicle that had started to turn left. The Saturn collided with a traffic signal pole and a pedestrian before coming to rest on the southeast corner of the intersection. The pedestrian was thrown into a third vehicle that was turning right from Consumers Drive to go south on Thickson Road. The pole was knocked over and laid across the intersection, police said.

The 19-year-old driver of the sedan, from Scugog Township was rushed to hospital and a 55-year-old male passenger from Oshawa was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre. Both remain in stable condition with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The 22-year-old male pedestrian from Oshawa was rushed to a Toronto trauma hospital and remains in hospital care in stable condition. The 62-year-old female driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

The road was closed for several hours while members from the Collision Investigation Unit investigated the collision and are still investigating the cause of the collision.
