The Town of Whitby said nearly 10,000 people joined on Saturday to mark the opening of the newly-built Fieldgate Sports Complex, and enjoy free family activities and programming.
With the grand opening, regular programming is underway, the town said.
It said residents can now visit Fieldgate for a variety of drop-in recreation opportunities, including swimming, skating, basketball, pickleball, badminton, volleyball, and preschool activities. Walking track memberships are also now available.
There is still space in the Fall Registered Recreation Programs at the facility.
Community rooms, gym space, ice and select outdoor amenities are also available for rental or future-season permitting.
Virtual Tour
The town has put up a virtual version of the self-guided tour featured at the opening. The online tour takes residents through different areas of the complex, sharing more about the design, features, and engagement behind the new facility.
“This past weekend, we celebrated the opening of a facility that Whitby residents helped shape from the very beginning. The Fieldgate Sports Complex is our most significant recreation project to date and one of 62 commitments in Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan. It represents years of listening, planning and collaboration — and a major investment in quality of life of our growing town. Built by the community, for the community, this facility reflects Whitby at its best: active, connected, inclusive and ready for the future,” said Mayor Elizabeth Roy.
Located west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407, the approximately 15,200-square-metre (some 164,000-square-foot) facility will serve as a premier destination for recreation, sport, and community connection in Whitby.
Part-funded by Ottawa
The project was funded in part by the Government of Canada which invested $25 million through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program.
Construction on the Fieldgate Sports Complex began with a ground-breaking in September 2023.
The town said amenities include a twin-pad arena, Durham’s largest aquatics centre, double gymnasium with walking track, and community and program spaces.
The complex also includes a 13-acre outdoor park featuring pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, Whitby’s first artificial turf field, skatepark, pump track, playground and more.
