Alto’s goal is to offer fares that are competitive and accessible to a wide range of travellers, so the train can be a realistic alternative to driving or flying, said an Alto statement.
The proposed high-speed rail route runs from Quebec City to Toronto with a stop in Peterborough (see map below). Though no stop has been planned in Durham, the Town of Whitby has asked to be part of the Alto planning process.
Exact ticket prices have not yet been set.
An Alto spokesperson explained that right now its still too early to provide specific details on ticket prices because the final route and service offerings are currently being developed.
Affordability A Core Objective
“To set ticket prices we need to determine exact operating cost and exact service details such as travel times and service frequency,” he said. “That being said, affordability is one of our core objectives.”
The spokesperson said the goal is to offer ticket prices that are competitive when compared to the cost of existing travel options whether that’s driving, flying or taking conventional rail.
“We’re also exploring different ticket pricing models including multiple service levels like economy and business class as well as targeting discounts for certain groups to reflect different travel needs and customer profiles,” he pointed out.
“As the project continues, we will continue to refine the fare structure and will be able to share more details,” he added.
Before construction begins, Alto must complete the work required to turn a broad plan into a construction-ready project. That includes consultation with the public and indigenous communities, field studies, environmental assessment, route and station analysis, engineering, cost estimates and detailed design.
